  38.     The Old SLM 804 driver is there, it just takes up no space in the
  39. archive. Note: Only one 'Atari Laser Printer' appears in the
  40. selection box, so erase the one you don't need!

  60.     As you can see with NO printer drivers or the printer selector
  61. this is pretty useless, except that you get the DOC file, which 
  62. DOES NOT WORK for the files sent, because there is no SETUP.PRG .

  68. DIRECTIONS:
  69.  
  70.     If you are not already using XCONTROL panel, you should start. It
  71. can make your life alot easier.
  72.

  74. *** DO NOT reboot TILL I TELL YOU TOO!!!
  75.

  77. 1)  Unarc the files using Questor onto the C: partition of your Hard
  78. Disk.
  79.  
  80.     NO Hard Drive!, and you still want to use FontGDOS, you are going
  81. to need lots of room on that little diskette of yours.
  82. (I recommend you use DC Squish and DataDiet if you have it.)
  83.  
  84.     If you are short of space just unarc what you need using ARCSHELL
  85. 3.1 or a similar utility.

  102.     DC Squish is okay for the Program and will save 6k, DC DataDiet,
  103. (DO NOT use it on the SYS files), works on the CPXS and DOC files
  104. saving 52k, so the total will still be ~250k.
  105.  
  106.     If you are using another compression system, Questor's, the result
  107. should be about the same or a little smaller.
  108.

  110. ***IF YOU HAVE MORE THAT 1 PRINTER, you can use more than one printer
  111. driver. For example if you have a Deskjet for documents and a EPSON
  112. for disk labels, you will need both DJ5.SYS and FX80.SYS in your
  113. folder.
  114.  
  115. ***IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE PRINTER YOU HAVE, check your printers manual
  116. for compatible printer drivers.
  117.  
  118.  
  119. 2)  If the files were not unarced where they should be, they will need
  120. to be moved into the proper places.
  121.  
  122.     FONTGDOS.PRG goes into the AUTO folder, placement has not been
  123. mentioned in the DOCS but I decided to place it beside the G+PLUS.PRG,
  124. CODEHEAD  was very specific where to put G+Plus, after all the FIX
  125. programs and any ram disks, but before DATADIET, WARP9, and NEOLOAD.
  126.  
  127.     The CPX programs go with the rest of your CPX programs, and the
  128. ACC's go in the root directory.
  129.  
  130.     The Drivers should be in the folder called PRINTERS, although you
  131. can change that to whatever you like, I called my folder FONTGDOS.
  132. Note: This is also were you should place all the fonts you own.
  133.  
  134. 3)  If your are using ATARI XControl Panel this will be easy because
  135. you do not need to reboot, if NOT change FONTGDOS.PRG in your AUTO
  136. folder to FONTGDOS.PRX and see that there are no more than 6 active
  137. ACCessory programs, then reboot.

  140. a)  Open your XCONTROL panel accessory.
  141.  
  142.     SELECT OPTIONS. SELECT SETUP.
  143.  
  144.     Next RELOAD your CPX's, the button with the arrows from the X to
  145. the CPX icon. This should automatically load the new CPX's because
  146. they are named CPX and not the unselected CPZ.
  147.  
  148.     SELECT OK, and take a look at your 3 new CPX's.
  149.

  151. b)  Wait for your computer to reboot.

  156. 4)  The GDOS Printer Selector
  157.  
  158.     If you have lots of fonts and drivers, this could take awhile, my
  159. 80 fonts and drivers take close to 3 minutes to load in.
  160.  
  161.     Under the heading current printer is a shadowed box, this is your
  162. selected printer right?
  163.  
  164. IF NONE, click OPTIONS, then Set Font/Driver Path and select the path
  165. where the Printer Drivers and Fonts are kept. Click OK, then TOP MENU.
  166. Then you can select your current printer by clicking on the box.
  167.  
  168. IF you unarced more than one printer driver select the appropriate
  169. driver.
  170.  
  171. Then SAVE. There you are!
  172.  
  173. ***This CPX will now create the ASSIGN.SYS file, changing the old one
  174. to ASSIGN.OLD

  179.     NEXT select OPTIONS again. Then Driver Installation.
  180.  
  181.     This is covered in the DOCS, but as a review. The Active Devices
  182. are the devices you will need to print and create meta files:
  183.  
  184.     Devices 1-10 are SCREEN.SYS drivers that are built into [ROM].
  185.     Devices 11-20 are PLOTTER.SYS drivers and are disk [RES]ident.
  186.     Devices 21-30 are PRINTER.SYS drivers and are disk [RES]ident.
  187.     Devices 31-40 are META.SYS drivers and are disk [RES]ident.

  189. P.S. I don't know how the MEMORY.SYS driver is to be used, YET!, but
  190. it will produce the page to be printed in memory, I think.
  191.  
  192.     These are set up using the AVAILABLE Devices section, making sure
  193. to select either ROM or RES, then ADD the device. You will probably
  194. notice the first 9 are already preset, and that they are all set to
  195. ROM. So all you need to set is 21 and 31, and these should be set to
  196. RES. (If more than 1 printer, set 22,23,... to the printer drivers.)

  198. Select MENU to exit.
  199.  
  200.     Select Font Installation next.
  201.  
  202. Displayed currently are the active fonts.
  203.  
  204.     Click on the Active Fonts box and the Inactive Fonts will be
  205. displayed so you can ADD fonts to the Active list. 
  206.     For which fonts to use for each device see FontGDOS docs to see
  207. which resolution matches which device:
  208.  
  209.     nameXXLO.FNT Low Screen Resolution
  210.     nameXXCG.FNT Medium Screen Resolution
  211.     nameXXHI.FNT High Screen Resolution
  212.     nameXXEP.FNT Printers that do 120x144 dpi
  213.     nameXXSP.FNT Printers that do 180x180 dpi
  214.     nameXXQD.FNT Printers that do 240x144 dpi
  215.     nameXXNP.FNT Printers that do 360x360 dpi
  216.     nameXXLS.FNT Printers that do 300x300 dpi
  217.     nameXXLB.FNT Printers that do 160x72 dpi
  218.     nameXXMF.FNT Meta File Fonts

  220. Where XX is the font 'name's point size.
  221.  
  222. Click MENU, TOP MENU, then SAVE your modified ASSIGN.SYS file.

  225. 5)  The FSM Font Manager
  226.  
  227. Not to much to do here, SELECT Options Menu, then Outline Font Setup.
  228. This control panel is mainly for use with FSM GDOS not this bitmapped
  229. stuff.
  230.  
  231. The ONLY setting to worry about is Set Font Cache.
  232.     Character at 20 (smallest)
  233.     Miscellaneous at 20 (smallest)
  234.     Bitmap Font is set to the file size of your largest font
  235.     (uncompressed) as a rule.
  236. This is the amount of memory put aside to hold the fonts, therefore
  237. if you only have a 520ST and the largest font you have is 210k this
  238. will eat up so much memory you will be unable to run any applications.

  242. Saving creates the EXTEND.SYS file needed.

  245. 6)  The FSM Printer Configuration
  246.  
  247. This installs the selected printer driver to the printer in use.
  248. Thats all! If there is more than one printer driver loaded select the
  249. one you wish to use, then exit.
  250.  
  251. Your DONE!

  253. Now you can change the FONTGDOS.PRX in the AUTO folder back to .PRG
  254. if you had to reboot earlier.
  255.  
  256. You have now installed FontGDOS, and can REBOOT!
  257.  
  258.  
  259. Known conflicts with FontGDOS while using WARP 9 at NeoDesk will cause
  260. the screen not to be cleared properly. The arguments about who needs
  261. to fix what are already going on.
  262.  
  263. If you are using Word Up!, stick to the GDOS or get G+Plus, because
  264. it has always used a 'load as you need it' font caching system.
