A general guide for anyone to use, and I take no responsibility for
any damage done by my unselfish gift to the public.

selection box, so erase the one you don't need!

As you can see with NO printer drivers or the printer selector
this is pretty useless, except that you get the DOC file, which
DOES NOT WORK for the files sent, because there is no SETUP.PRG .
DIRECTIONS:
If you are not already using XCONTROL panel, you should start. It
can make your life alot easier.
*** DO NOT reboot TILL I TELL YOU TOO!!!
1) Unarc the files using Questor onto the C: partition of your Hard
Disk.
NO Hard Drive!, and you still want to use FontGDOS, you are going
to need lots of room on that little diskette of yours.
(I recommend you use DC Squish and DataDiet if you have it.)
If you are short of space just unarc what you need using ARCSHELL
3.1 or a similar utility.
I suggest only:
22471 FONTGDOS.DOC
26591 AUTO\FONTGDOS.PRG
54759 CPX\FSM.CPX
34492 CPX\FSMPRINT.CPX
43025 CPX\FONTGDOS.CPX
58397 PRINTERS\MEMORY.SYS
9718 PRINTERS\META.SYS
~60000 PRINTERS\*** the driver for your printer***
--------
~309453 bytes
DC Squish is okay for the Program and will save 6k, DC DataDiet,
(DO NOT use it on the SYS files), works on the CPXS and DOC files
saving 52k, so the total will still be ~250k.
If you are using another compression system, Questor's, the result
should be about the same or a little smaller.
***IF YOU HAVE MORE THAT 1 PRINTER, you can use more than one printer
driver. For example if you have a Deskjet for documents and a EPSON
for disk labels, you will need both DJ5.SYS and FX80.SYS in your
folder.
***IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE PRINTER YOU HAVE, check your printers manual
for compatible printer drivers.
2) If the files were not unarced where they should be, they will need
to be moved into the proper places.
FONTGDOS.PRG goes into the AUTO folder, placement has not been
mentioned in the DOCS but I decided to place it beside the G+PLUS.PRG,
CODEHEAD was very specific where to put G+Plus, after all the FIX
programs and any ram disks, but before DATADIET, WARP9, and NEOLOAD.
The CPX programs go with the rest of your CPX programs, and the
ACC's go in the root directory.
The Drivers should be in the folder called PRINTERS, although you
can change that to whatever you like, I called my folder FONTGDOS.
Note: This is also were you should place all the fonts you own.
3) If your are using ATARI XControl Panel this will be easy because
you do not need to reboot, if NOT change FONTGDOS.PRG in your AUTO
folder to FONTGDOS.PRX and see that there are no more than 6 active
ACCessory programs, then reboot.
a) Open your XCONTROL panel accessory.
SELECT OPTIONS. SELECT SETUP.
Next RELOAD your CPX's, the button with the arrows from the X to
the CPX icon. This should automatically load the new CPX's because
they are named CPX and not the unselected CPZ.
SELECT OK, and take a look at your 3 new CPX's.
b) Wait for your computer to reboot.
4) The GDOS Printer Selector
If you have lots of fonts and drivers, this could take awhile, my
80 fonts and drivers take close to 3 minutes to load in.
Under the heading current printer is a shadowed box, this is your
selected printer right?
IF NONE, click OPTIONS, then Set Font/Driver Path and select the path
where the Printer Drivers and Fonts are kept. Click OK, then TOP MENU.
Then you can select your current printer by clicking on the box.
IF you unarced more than one printer driver select the appropriate
driver.
Then SAVE. There you are!
***This CPX will now create the ASSIGN.SYS file, changing the old one
to ASSIGN.OLD
NEXT select OPTIONS again. Then Driver Installation.
This is covered in the DOCS, but as a review. The Active Devices
are the devices you will need to print and create meta files:
Devices 1-10 are SCREEN.SYS drivers that are built into [ROM].
Devices 11-20 are PLOTTER.SYS drivers and are disk [RES]ident.
Devices 21-30 are PRINTER.SYS drivers and are disk [RES]ident.
Devices 31-40 are META.SYS drivers and are disk [RES]ident.
P.S. I don't know how the MEMORY.SYS driver is to be used, YET!, but
it will produce the page to be printed in memory, I think.
These are set up using the AVAILABLE Devices section, making sure
to select either ROM or RES, then ADD the device. You will probably
notice the first 9 are already preset, and that they are all set to
ROM. So all you need to set is 21 and 31, and these should be set to
RES. (If more than 1 printer, set 22,23,... to the printer drivers.)
Select MENU to exit.
Select Font Installation next.
Displayed currently are the active fonts.
Click on the Active Fonts box and the Inactive Fonts will be
displayed so you can ADD fonts to the Active list.
For which fonts to use for each device see FontGDOS docs to see
which resolution matches which device:
nameXXLO.FNT Low Screen Resolution
nameXXCG.FNT Medium Screen Resolution
nameXXHI.FNT High Screen Resolution
nameXXEP.FNT Printers that do 120x144 dpi
nameXXSP.FNT Printers that do 180x180 dpi
nameXXQD.FNT Printers that do 240x144 dpi
nameXXNP.FNT Printers that do 360x360 dpi
nameXXLS.FNT Printers that do 300x300 dpi
nameXXLB.FNT Printers that do 160x72 dpi
nameXXMF.FNT Meta File Fonts
Where XX is the font 'name's point size.
Click MENU, TOP MENU, then SAVE your modified ASSIGN.SYS file.
5) The FSM Font Manager
Not to much to do here, SELECT Options Menu, then Outline Font Setup.
This control panel is mainly for use with FSM GDOS not this bitmapped
stuff.
The ONLY setting to worry about is Set Font Cache.
Character at 20 (smallest)
Miscellaneous at 20 (smallest)
Bitmap Font is set to the file size of your largest font
(uncompressed) as a rule.
This is the amount of memory put aside to hold the fonts, therefore
if you only have a 520ST and the largest font you have is 210k this
will eat up so much memory you will be unable to run any applications.
OK to EXIT
Saving creates the EXTEND.SYS file needed.
6) The FSM Printer Configuration
This installs the selected printer driver to the printer in use.
Thats all! If there is more than one printer driver loaded select the
one you wish to use, then exit.
Your DONE!
Now you can change the FONTGDOS.PRX in the AUTO folder back to .PRG
if you had to reboot earlier.
You have now installed FontGDOS, and can REBOOT!
Known conflicts with FontGDOS while using WARP 9 at NeoDesk will cause
the screen not to be cleared properly. The arguments about who needs
to fix what are already going on.
If you are using Word Up!, stick to the GDOS or get G+Plus, because
it has always used a 'load as you need it' font caching system.
